It off the hinges if you’ve ever had to paint an interior d r (or wondered how), I’ve figured out a little way to paint a d r without taking. This one small trick saves me plenty time and the hassle of wanting to re-hang old, settled d rs!
How to Paint a hinged d r without Taking It well the Hinges Why don’t you Remove?
You just take the d r off the hinges?”, the answer is simple it’s more time-consuming, and you can’t guarantee that the d r will still hang the same when you try to put it back up again before you suggest “why don’t. I’d like to avoid that hassle if at all possible! )
The first step protect with tape
First, have a strip of painter’s tape and cover the hinge you are trying to protect.
Step two find your line
Next, sm th your little finger along the side of the hinge. In most situations, the hinge will not be exactly flush aided by the d r itself, and that means you will probably have a recessed side.
Third step cut the outline
Take an exacto knife and run it along the edge you created into the tape.
Paint a D r Without using It well The Hinges – remove tape that is remaining
Remove the staying exterior portion of the tape that is currently separated from the piece that continues to be since the steel hinge.
Fourth step paint!
Now, it’s much easier to paint over without needing extra cleanup! Paint throughout the certain area, and you also won’t need certainly to worry the maximum amount of about getting paint on the hinges. Simply remove the taped part whenever you’re done (ideally whenever paint continues to be damp so that the line comes off clean… if you wait until it’s dry, it might take down some paint through the d r).

Hmm… g d idea for the hinges. I’ll need certainly to try out that tip – we have around 7 d rs that want to be painted ultimately, and I also’ll acknowledge that i have completely been slacking and procrastinating, partially because I don’t wish to just take the d rs down. Thanks for the end!
Been painting d rs. Put 2 coats of primer and 1 of paint. Now thw d r doesn’t close right. The paint causes it to be thicker and does not want to close properly.
Glad I Really could help! The d r that is firstn’t almost as simple. We really re-created the d r hinge shape and slice the tape to fit… over and over again for each part of this hinge. I ultimately discovered my course though – a lot of d rways in the house to continue with that method!

I happened to be just attempting to figure this down! I’m in the midst of painting my bathr m and there is a tight space needing painted where it is either eliminate the entire d r or (I thought) paint over the hinge. This really is a great deal better! Thanks
G d plan! Many Thanks! I really like it that you share each one of these trial and errors. Being fully a single girl and needing to do all this stuff throughout the house can be overbearing at times and also this post really assists.
Great idea! Therefore simple, yet so effective.
Can you tell me how to get paint off the hinges without removing them. Thanks

Scrape with a razor blade. You can buy one which has a sleeve that is little you can also use for scraping paint off glass (like around your windows).
I’ve additionally seen where you could immerse them in a slow-c ker and it will take away the paint ( but you’d need to take the hinges from the hinged d r, obviously, therefore not as simple as scrapping).
Thanks, Amanda P
This absolutely would not work since the hinged d r won’t easily fit into the c king pot. Red the inquiry !
Scrape carefully with a razor blade to get rid of paint.
Probably question that is dumb but what type of paint did you employ for your d rs and trim? is it necessary to sand at all? mine are unsightly 70’s flat d rways, which can be really needing a makeover!
Sarah Ugly Duckling Home says
Perhaps Not f lish. I used Behr Ultra White in semi-gloss. I sanded the d rways but did’t sand the trim (though I did so utilize Zinsser primer in high traffic/scuff areas first). These d rs are flat t ; I’m considering beefing them up with color (like light grey).
